Cuban dissidents facing harassment"
On 10 June 2003, the Cuban Social Democratic Coordinating Committee received a formal complaint from the dissident group, Corriente Socialista Democratica Cubana (CSDC). The organisation’s leading figures have been summoned before the Cuban state security service and threatened with possible detention and lengthy prison terms if they continue with the organisation’s own activities. 10/06/2003
The clampdown by Cuba’s political police has been felt hardest in the
island’s eastern provinces – an area of Cuba that the secretary general of
CSDC, Manuel Cuesta Morua, has been banned from visiting.
CSDC has advised that it will continue its battle in the same way as it has done to date, and wants us to make crystal-clear to public opinion that there will be no halting of the group’s peaceful pro-democracy activities in Cuba. In particular, they have asked us to convey news of what is happening there to you, and would like us to relate details to our respective parties within the Socialist International. They assure us that we should be on the lookout in the very near future for a possible escalation in reprisals against the organisations of the Arco Progresista dissident coalition within Cuba, which CSDC is a member of alongside the Cuban Social Democratic Coordinating Committee. Signed: General Secretariat of the Cuban Social Democratic Coordinating Committee |
